1/31 SBP
I found this tutorial on how to make candy corn embellishment for your scrapbooking, and I made my own version of her layout. I used the teal rickrack and added some pressed autumn leaves on the page. :-)
If you'd like, you could use more orange making the candycorns, black rickrack and really orange leaves, to make it more Halloweeny.
I think it's a bit boring compared to the one using contrasting colors, but if you are making a 31 to Halloween mini scrapbook and documenting every day of October, you might want your book to have the Halloween colors.
I was thinking "December Daily"... perhaps I could take a photo of my day... it's not going to be interesting in any way, as most of the days it will be a photo of me in bed writing. Or sleeping.
To other things: wouldn't this be an absolutely amazing Halloween party? I just love everything about it, from the invitations to all-black-Victorian costumes...

A little complaining first...
I have been looking around at people's blog's and all the amazing things they do for Samhain, and I feel poor. Painfully, horribly, hopelessly, limitingly poor. For some 30 years I have been trying to invent things one can do as much DIY as possible, and there IS a lot one can do... but...
I cannot have a house and garden.
I cannot have antique furniture, with a beautiful sheen that only comes from decades of polishing.
I cannot have give-aways, because I cannot afford the postal fees.
I cannot do a lot of DIY either, because I cannot afford buying what is needed... like such simple things like hot glue gun, pretty ribbons, paint.
On top of this... I have fibromyalgia, which sometimes robs me even the possibility of doing things with the things I CAN afford, like anything found outside, and simple, white paper and watercolors.
Yesterday I was really, really happy and full of ideas of what I could do and how I could offer you a really good Samhain party, and today...
My hands hurt.
It's my husband's birthday, and my hands hurt.
He asked only for one thing for his birthday, and I cannot give that to him, because my hands hurt.
I know I shouldn't be complaining and sharing my woes with you, this is supposed to be a party, and even if I MAY cry on MY party, it's not polite and nice. If you bother enough to come, I should bother enough to even TRY being a good hostess. *sigh*

Halloween/Samhain Blog Party 2010
I am going to participate in two: The Domestic Witch's Samhain Party, which is going to last the whole October, and Fanciful Twist's Blog Hop Party, which is going to be on October 16th :-)
Participating in a Blog Party is quite easy; you need to write a blog entry, and then you should also visit the other participants' blogs and leave a comment :-)
There are thousands of ideas of themes for your blog entry, but it's usually about a party - what would you be wearing, how would you decorate, what would you be eating and drinking and so on, if this was a skin-life party.
I think the fantastic here is that it is a fantasy party, so only your imagination sets limits :-D
You can invite ANYONE, a person who is dead, alive, book character, movie character, moviestar... what ever you like :-)
You can eat anything, drink anything, you won't ever get sick or fat of anything you eat or drink at blog parties :-D
You can imagine your home to be anything you like, you can imagine being able to decorate the exactly as you like... If you'd like to PAINT your house black and orange for Halloween, you can do that - and the next day it would be the color it usually is :-)
Everyone will be doing what you want, you will be having fun, and you can wave your magic wand and make party spoilers disappear ;-)
I am off planning my October of Samhain celebration :-) I hope to see you tomorrow :-D

Being poisoned
I am a middle-aged woman, as I have said several times.
I grew up in a Christian environment, not in a severe and hateful such, but loving and tolerant one. I read the Bible as a fairytale book when I was about 10, and with "fairytale book" I don't mean "invented entertainment that is not true", but educational entertainment, useful life lessons for children, covered with enough magic to make the medicine go down, quick and easy. I was very interested of the stories and the people and what they had to say. I read Christian children's magazines, and loved them, I read Christian picture books and loved them. One of my favorites is actually a book written about a boy and his cat as an introduction to the 10 commandments :-D
My mother has a very warm and close relation to God. I think I inherited that attitude. God is a power beyond us, mightier than anything else, God is who created us, made us into what and who we are now, gave us everything, EVERYTHING, we have, and loves us, because God made us...
I grew up in a world where the religion was synonymous to Christianity. I was about 10 when I first met Jehova's Witnesses, but to me that was just another form of Christianity. We had been studying about the Revivalism in school, and I learned from that that everyone has their own form of religion. (that is, Christianity.)
Later we were to learn about other religions than Christianity, and to me they all were Pagans. Jews and Muslims maybe less so, but still... very archaic, aggressive, cruel, violent, hateful and primitive forms of religions, something that hasn't changed, ever, and not evolved, like Christianity. I was slightly interested in Pantheism and Animism, but... our teacher was Christian - as every religion teacher I've ever had - and so the teaching was infused with her attitudes, and that was "there is no religion but Christianity, and all the others are crude, primitive, superstitious crap". We were never taught WHAT Pantheism and Animism, or anything else, really was. These were never any feasible options to the One and Only True Religion.
My aunt had been "born again", and my grandmother - her mother - died. At the funeral, she had asked her Christian friends to help, and these people... My aunt also provided me with some of the publications she was reading, and... that was my first encounter with the Christian vitriol towards ANYTHING not Christian "enough".
My sisters had moved to Sweden and were introduced to New Age, and they forwarded that to me too, and even though it didn't fully resonate within me, this was closer to what I really felt was the truth than Christianity, and it was also the first encounter I had about an alternative to Christianity as a viable religion. As I am not an Atheist, but a Monotheist, with an exceptionally strong faith in God, I welcomed these ideas.
At this point of time, the Christian vitriol was poured over New Age, and thus over me, my sisters and all the nice people I've met in these circles.
The main point of change happened one day, when we were supposed to read the Bible in school, and I was met with the words "The man has now become like one of us"... It's not a "majestic plural". One of us - us... who? My teacher couldn't explain this, so she made me repeat "and so did God love the world blah blah blah". That was the end of it.
I have never been comfortable with the idea of Jesus being Son of God and God, having died for our sins, that he would judge us after death, and not according to how we have lived, not even according to what we believe, but arbitrarily, by mercy alone.... not deeds, not faith, but mercy alone... so there never was anything I could do to see that I wouldn't burn in hell the rest of eternity. One couldn't even trust in God's love, because God DID NOT love everyone. Only some chosen few. Everyday I was bombarded with the idea that some people DESERVED the fire of hell and so on. Then there were all these rules... The Old Testament had been, in all its cruelty, HUMAN, the New Testament was boring, pretentious, weird... with one word, fake. It was also very exclusive. They lived in a world where there was only a handful of women, and they were all called Mary, except for Martha. I know this is a very childish description of Christianity and its main tenets, but I have Asperger's Syndrome and I am very childlike in many ways. I also have to say, that if a religion, philosophy, ideology, doctrine, doesn't manage to convince a CHILD, what possibilities it has with adults?
So, at the age of 17, realized that I do not believe in Jesus, and there is nothing in Christianity for me, so I must be an Atheist.
Later my sisters gave me "Witch's Handbook", which was my first encounter to the idea of that there are people in this world who believe to be witches, and they call it a RELIGION. (Wicca) The ideas took some time to grow, and in 1999 I declared I was Wiccan, after having investigated it in the Internet. I was a Pagan, one of these people believing the "crude, primitive, superstitious crap", and that that crap was exactly what my spiritual soil needed to flourish and bear fruit. :->
At THAT time, I entered the USonian Christian vitriol shower, now as a witch and a Pagan.
Now, one needs to remember that I have actually READ THE BIBLE, and several times... Most USonians defining themselves as Christians HAVE NOT. I was being attacked by people repeating what they had been told and taught by self-appointed leaders and teachers, and I KNEW it was WRONG. When I proved it to these people, they started screaming about me being from Satan, and Satan putting words in my mouth, and that *I* was twisting God's Word, and what not.
They were also saying that my God - my good and kind and gentle and loving God, who had stood by me through everything, who had encouraged me, supported me, comforted me, walked before me into every fight, and carried me, when I was weak - they said my God was wicked, fake, evil whore. That I knew not faith, love, or any other positive feeling, that everything I was and believed was dirty, ugly, fake and wrong... My conviction was hollow only because they didn't share it, my faith was weak, because they didn't believe the same things, my God was a fantasy figure, because they used different words when they spoke about theirs...
The worst thing is that EVERY TIME it has been shown that it is they who don't have any faith in God, because if they did, they wouldn't be so defensive and aggressive and possessive. "The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord", says the Bible - THEIR Bible, and yet when ever Lord taketh away, these people cry, scream, fear and hate, swear revenge and start lynching mobs.
Just look at the USonian Republican Christian reaction on 9/11. "Let's go bomb Iraq, Afghanistan and everyone who looks in any way suspect." What happened to "turn the other cheek"? If someone wants your WTC, you give them the whole Manhattan? It's better for a man to loose his hand than his soul?
Not only are these people weak in faith, they are also disloyal. They don't do what their God told them to do.They do what their "authorities" tell them to do, hate by command of their leaders, fear what their leaders tell them to fear, start wars of any kind of reasons, against anything, have no tolerance, patience or kindness towards anything or anyone in any way different. They keep sowing disagreement and segregation around themselves, whine about people wishing "happy holidays" in stead of what ever it is THEY choose to call the holiday, about people not being "real" Christians, patriots, this or that, have temper tantrums and argue about everything. What ever happened to "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance"? These people claim that these are the "fruits of Holy Spirit"; if you have it, you cannot but show these qualities, and if you show these qualities, you cannot but have the Holy Spirit. I'm sorry, but "decisiveness" is not a "fruit of Holy Spirit".
Nevertheless, even in spite of the vitriol shower I have been subjected to by these "loving and kind" Christians, FOR OVER 20 YEARS, I would like to point out - I only burst out in "vitriolic attacks", when I meet the most glaring examples of the ignorance, arrogance, egoism, aggressiveness and offensiveness of Christianity. You can call it an allergic reaction. :-> I would also like to add: when now these people think so highly of themselves and so lowly of everyone else, why the heck should I even TRY to be civil? They don't have any right to even expect a civil treatment from their victims, on the contrary. All they have to expect is to be bitten, whipped, bashed, spanked, DISCIPLINED, AND
About stealing other people's traditions, habits, Gods and what not.
Yes, we all do that.
But who has stolen another people's God and now claim to have more right to this God than His original people? As far as I know, only Christians (and Muslims...).
The God of Jews is the God of Jews, because when it was time to choose Gods, only Jews chose him. Not Arabs, and none of the European peoples, and no-one in Africa, Australia or China. Only Jews. So He chose them, because they chose Him. If you want to belong to Him and worship Him, CONVERT TO JUDAISM! If you think the Jews have misunderstood their own religion, CONVERT TO JUDAISM AND LIVE LIKE YOU THINK JEWS SHOULD LIVE.
But, no, these people didn't want to be Jews, so they just took everything Jewish and started calling it something else, and on top of it, now they believe it's theirs, and ONLY theirs!
I mean... Neo-Pagans "steal" Deities right and left. We have practically adopted ANY God, ever, in every religions. Some even count God and Jesus as "Pagan Gods"! (Some people really have no clue of what "Pagan" means.... *sigh*) But I have never heard a Neo-Pagan say to a Hindu, that the Pagan has more rights to Sarasvati, and that Sarasvati loves the Neo-Pagan more than She loves the Hindu, because She is a Neo-Pagan God and not a Hindu God. I have heard MANY Christians say bollocks like this to Jews.
Not only have the Christians stolen (yes, stolen - you steal something when you take something that doesn't rightfully and legally belong to you but someone else, without permission, without giving something in exchange, and claim it belongs to you, and you alone) the Jewish God, they also stole the Jewish God's promises to His people, the Jews, but they didn't take the obligations of the Jewish people... they just took what they wanted, and mixed it with other religious ideas, traditions and rulings, and created something they thought was "better". It's not that they created a new religion and called it that, no, they created a new religion and called it "the improved version"! Talk about invading your father's house and then kicking you out and saying that they are the rightful heir, AND YOUR FATHER ISN'T EVEN DEAD YET!!!
All the religions are practically taking, adapting, adopting and adjusting other people's beliefs and traditions into something one can live with, but the rudeness and arrogance of Christians! I know I'm not impartial in this discussion, I'm married to a Jewish man and thus know more of Judaism than people normally do, but I have seen what the Christians do all the time to Jews and Judaism, and it is disgusting.
And see what they did with Yule. It's not "Jesus' birthday". It's the birthday of Sun. Nevertheless, today we have a "war on Christmas"... These people who claim to express peace with their existence, to be unable to express anything opposite of peace, are ready to FIGHT OVER CHRISTMAS!!! IT WASN'T YOURS TO BEGIN WITH!
I don't mind people adopting others traditions and making them one's own, or giving them a new meaning, not at all. I do that all the time. We all do. But *I* don't adopt these traditions, fix them to suit my purposes and THEN say it's mine, mine, all mine, and always was and always will be, like the Christians do.
It might be unfair of me to speak of Christians as if they were a huge, monolithic group where all are the same, but I am sure we all know what I mean. If you define yourself as Christian, but don't recognize yourself from my description, then I'm obviously not talking about you. Unless, you cannot think of any Christian who behaves the way I have described, because then I AM indeed talking about you, but you are just too stupid to realize what you and your fellows are doing.

Spewing gall again...
I'm sorry about this, but... several things have happened this morning that have made me very, very irritated.
Pagan Enough Campaign
Now, I fully agree on most of this, and I think I just read Uncle Thor's newsletter or some such, where this same thing was pointed out. We might be many and a lots of different sorts, but we are still all Pagan, and as such we should really keep together.
There is one sentence, only one sentence in that writing that bugs me.
"Paganism does not have a set definition".
YES, IT DOES.
It's "a religion not Judaism, Christianity or Islam (or any of the religions and sects created from these three.)"
That makes Buddhists, Hindus and all the other people who follows a religion older than Judaism a Pagan.
That makes all these "Christian Pagans" cheats and idiots.
Nothing stops you from introducing Pagan elements into your Christian life, but if you believe Jesus died for your sins, you are not a Pagan, so stop calling yourself one and hogging other people's spirituality and traditions. Haven't you done that enough during your existence? Just because you got used to doing that during the first Millennium of current reckoning doesn't mean you should keep doing it, or even keep the traditions and spirituality you already stole. You cannot keep the cake and eat it too, and you cannot be both Pagan and non-Pagan (Christian).
Then we have the ideas presented here: Why I Hate Pagan Enough Campaign
Of course my personal preferences on such shallow things like what kind of music I like or what I like to wear has nothing to do with my spirituality. BUT one might need to think twice before embracing habits that are counter-productive to the goals of one's claimed spiritual beliefs.
"This isn't middle school". Yes, it is, and everyone knows it. You learn the social codes when you are a teenager, so the social codes of Middle and High School will prevail. PEOPLE DO NOT GROW UP.
BAH!
Another thing was that someone had been writing this long blog series about Goddess, and made the mistake of using a Christian image to illustrate Shekhinah... and I blew my top off.
Now, I do not have anything against Christianity and Christians, PER SE. What ever people choose to believe in is their choice. What I oppose is the greedy hogging, stealing and monopolizing of everything that has to do with spirituality. If you speak about God, everyone just automatically assumes, you are Christian. If you say you believe, you're Christian. Family Values are Christian. Faith, charity, kindness, love, all that is Christian!
I hate the "mission command". I leave you be, you leave me be. That's the way it should be.
I will not give one ounce of tolerance to the people who won't offer me any.
I will not give one ounce of kindness to the people who won't offer me any.
If you call me your enemy, then you have made yourself my enemy.
I am Pagan, and it's your God, your rules, even your hell, so that's where you'll be heading, not I.
Then there's the Black Hat Society. Red Hat Society is the world's largest women's society for women "closing and passed their 50". They all wear a red hat with purple dress, or just purple decorations, to honor and live up to Jenny Joseph's poem "Warning".
In my opinion we witches, the Black Hat Society, SHOULD wear our black hats proudly, as proudly as the Red Hat Society wears their red hats. I think we SHOULD dare to wear the witch hat the rest of the year too, and be proud about us being witches. I think we SHOULD get out of the broom closet, properly, bravely and fully, and WEAR A BLACK HAT.
The Spruz' Black Hat Society has a banner with a picture of a very pretty young witch. Not wearing a hat. It has also a big picture on the front page, showing four beautiful, young ladies, none wearing a hat.
I am not young, beautiful creature from fantasy paintings. I am a sturdy (read fat) middle-aged woman with a big nose and chin and bushy eyebrows. The hat would, at least, make me feel at home. Right now it's just a part of costume for Halloween and fairytales, and I hate that fact too. Wearing the witch hat wouldn't mark me as part of the Black Hat Society, but part of the loonies and village idiots.
AND I HATE IT, BECAUSE IT IS A LIE!
I hate the "mission command". I leave you be, you leave me be. That's the way it should be.
I will not give one ounce of tolerance to the people who won't offer me any.
I will not give one ounce of kindness to the people who won't offer me any.

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.

Oh, sorry...
Over a month since my last blog post. Well, well... things happen :-)
I found a site, new to me, but it has obviously been there for a good while.
It's Rhythm of The Home, and it is about natural, ecological, organic, earthy and antroposophic/teosophic way of life :-)
I love this felt cat pin, and the picture with all the tiny people behind Salley in the end of the article :-)
It's not a good day today. I have been trying to loose weight this whole week, and even though yesterday the scales showed I have lost 2 kilos this week, it's in 1 kilo today. I am also in serious pain. I suppose I am retaining water again. Well... I suppose this is Goddess' way of telling me to take it easy :-D

"Co-Dependency Movement" wrecks marriages?
In "How the Co-dependency Movement Is Ruining Marriages", dr. Willard F. Harley, Jr. tries to keep people codependent, for the sake of marriages. What he does is prove that he doesn't understand the concept of codependency.
Codependent behavior IS self-defeating and we SHOULD get rid of it.
It is NOT self-centeredness.
"Co-dependency can be defined as the tendency to put others' needs before your own."
Well, that's good, isn't it?
Actually it's not... because we are talking about NEEDS. Not fancies, wishes, dreams or desires, NEEDS. Every human being have needs, from the most basic needs of food, water and shelter to the NEED of company, love, appreciation, respect, touch and so on. Most people don't see these as needs, some even deny these being needs.
There is an interesting test about this - you are to write down the needs of children, and then compare your list to the "complete list", and you will find your needs that were not fulfilled when you were a child... For example, children have the need of order and cleanliness. Of course we manage without, a lot of people live their whole life without enough clean water and food. But denying someone company is just as bad as denying them clean water.
Also, it's not just about being selfless and compassionate. It's taking it to the extremes. "...to such a degree that you tend to discount or ignore your own feelings, desires and basic needs..."
The problem with this is that you are the only human being in the whole world who know your own needs and can see they are fulfilled. If you put someone else's needs always before your own - as codependent people do - and "wait" for your turn, you will be living in deprivation. Just as people can die of hunger, thirst and cold, they die of hunger for respect, appreciation, love and tenderness. The only difference is that if your physical needs are not fulfilled, you will die physically, but the emotional and social deprivation will only severely handicap you. Your compassion dies if your need for compassion is constantly ignored, you will stop hugging and caressing people, if your need for touch is ignored.
As said, you are the only one who can say "I need a hug", and if you always set someone else's needs before your own, you won't get the hug. If you don't get the hug when you need it, you will - sooner or later - stop giving hugs as well.
Dr. Harley says "I look at that definition and think of Mother Teresa"
Now, Mother Teresa was not as good as people tend to think...
If I find my self-esteem in the way I care for others, what's wrong with that?
What is wrong with that is that no-one finds self-esteem in the way they care for others. What ever "esteem" there is, will crumble the second I stop being useful. It will also make me esteem others by their usefulness. It makes Mother Teresa more valuable and esteemed than her patients. Her patients become just items deeming her value, status symbols.
I think we all understand what's wrong with that.
Then about the questionnaire.
The questions are not such that you can pick them apart one at a time. I assume there is some sort of "if you answer "yes" to more than 3 of the questions, you might have problems..." in the end of the questionnaire, but that makes it difficult to Schopenhauer codependency...
"If someone important to me expects me to do something, I should do it."
No, I should not. There are two key words in this sentence: expect and should.
"If someone important to me asks me to do something, I should consider, if it doesn't clash with my other commitments, violate my convictions, harm anyone or endanger my well-being and things that are important to me, etc."... is the right answer in my mind. I shouldn't be doing everything someone important to me asks me to do, just because this person is important to me.
It's like "if you love me, you go to bed with me".
The only correct answer to that is "if you'd love me, you wouldn't ask that of me".
Mr. Harley says: "I don't hop whenever someone says hop."
That is exactly what is being asked here. Should you hop just because your wife asks you to? No.
"But if, say, God expects something of me (and he's certainly important), I believe I should do it."
If you write "he" when talking about God, I doubt He is that important to you. :->
Nevertheless, we are not talking about God here, we are talking about your fellow human beings. We are also talking about reasonably healthy and equal adults here, so you cannot replace "someone important to you" with a child's parents or the doctor, or the police.
"Should I meet [my wife's] every expectation?"
"For starters, I can't do it."
Exactly... so why set yourself up to such impossible expectations as "you SHOULD do what is expected of you, otherwise the one who expects it of you is not important to you".
"I want to do what I can to meet her needs"
Of course. And that is not the definition of codependency.
"[I want to] avoid doing things that make her unhappy."
Of course. That is not the definition of codependency either.
"she's important to me and I try to do what she expects of me. So if the person is as important as Joyce, I guess my answer to the first question is, "yes," with the qualifier, "try to do it."
Actually, your answer to the first question is "no". There are no qualifiers, no conditions and no exceptions. The question was not "should I TRY to fulfill the needs of a person who is important to me, should I TRY to avoid causing worries to a person who is important to me, should I TRY to do the reasonable, rational things a person who is important to me asks of me, no. The question is "SHOULD I do what my wife EXPECTS of me".
"I should not be irritable or unpleasant."
Sometimes things like that cannot be avoided.
Sometimes people experience me irritable and unpleasant even when I haven't been so, at least from my own point of view.
Of course I should TRY to AVOID being irritable and unpleasant, not be irritable and unpleasant willingly, but that is not what is being asked here... I cannot influence how others experience me, how ever much I try. If I try to please everyone, I will please no-one. I cannot avoid wronging, because none of us is perfect, but I can apologize when I have wronged.
"I shouldn't do anything to make others angry at me."
Again, this is not a question of watching my behavior so that I don't willingly make others angry at me, but avoiding to do anything that MIGHT make someone angry.
I shouldn't speak up my mind, because someone might get angry.
I shouldn't wear pants, because someone might get angry.
I shouldn't kiss my boyfriend in open street, because someone might get angry.
I shouldn't use the toilet after 8 P.M. because someone might get angry.
I shouldn't eat garlic because someone might get angry.
THIS is what is being asked, not common rules of courtesy, like "I shouldn't interrupt someone when they are talking, I shouldn't point out people's faults and failures..."
Besides, who gets angry by such?
"...if she feels anger toward me, I have done something that has annoyed or offended her, and should try to avoid it if I can."
So, when a wife-beater justifies his violence by saying that the wife did something to deserve it, your advice to her is to "avoid doing it"? Oh, no, Willard. Wrong answer.
"I should keep people I love happy."
No. I cannot keep anyone but myself happy. Other people's feelings and attitudes are not my responsibility.
"I know, we can't "make" anyone happy."
So your answer to this question is "no" too.
"I wanted to try to meet her emotional needs", "I wanted to avoid hurting her", "[I wanted to] avoid making her unhappy"
But that was not asked, Willard.
"I'm aware of the downside of trying to make people happy. If they turn all responsibility for their happiness over to us, we end up carrying a crushing load. But most people don't do that. It's only in unhealthy relationships that one person sucks the life out of the other."
And the same thing happens when someone tries to take on the responsibility on someone else's happiness. Just as unhealthy. Instead of sucking the life out of the other, this person is suffocating the other.
Your answer to this question is "no" as well.
"It's usually my fault if someone I care about is upset with me."
Not necessarily, but if I think I have the power to influence someone else's feelings, I'm on a power trip I should leave immediately and return home.
"From a philosophical level, I think we can all agree that if someone is upset with us, we had at least something to do with their reaction."
Not necessarily. By my experience, in 90% of cases - if not more - when one person is upset with another, there lies a huge misunderstanding somewhere, and the "fault" is both's. In many cases codependency is the reason. Someone tries to fulfill someone else's expectations, do what they consider being the best of the other, without bothering TO ASK, simply because one should do to others what one oneself prefers, and not what the others would like, want or need.
Nevertheless, we need to stop asking "who", and start asking "what can be done to correct the situation", and then just do it. A friend of mine used to say "ok, now we have distributed the guilt, can we get on to the important matters?"
"The word "usually" helps me answer this one with a "yes."
Wrong, again, Willard. By adding "usually", "try" and other such words, you change the meaning of the questions.
"I obtain self-esteem out of helping others solve their problems."
Codependent people have no other self-esteem except in their usefulness for others, in how they can help others. That is a very dysfunctional way of thinking, and I have already spoken of it.
"If I can't do anything for someone else, I'm certain I'd have no reason to have self-esteem."
So you think people who cannot do anything for someone else are worthless. Nice to know. I hope your wife will never get sick. The lack of esteem for one's spouse is a definite marriage wrecker.
"Self-esteem is not something that I need in order to be productive. It's being productive that gives me self-esteem. It's what comes after we do something, not before. And what we do for self-esteem can't be just anything. It must be what we value."
Oh?
Actually, you couldn't be more wrong.
If I have no self-esteem, I do nothing, because nothing I do is worth doing, because I cannot do anything. I must believe I can do something to do it.
A human being's worth is not in the person's productivity. Thinking that sick people are worthless is sick, Willard.
"I'm afraid I fail the co-dependency test again."
No, you're not. You are being sarcastic. Besides, if you get full points, how are you failing the test? According to you, you are very codependent, and thus succeed perfectly in the test. Unfortunately - to your clients - you don't have the slightest idea of what codependency is, and your view on the value of human beings sucks.
"I value most what I do for others."
You are changing the questions again, Willard. It was not ""I obtain most self-esteem out of helping others." It was "I obtain self-esteem out of helping others solve their problems." With other words: "My value depends totally on me being able to help others SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS. I don't care about my own problems, those I'll solve when everyone else is problem-free, everyone else's problems are much more important than mine."
"I tend to overextend myself in taking care of others."
This question he doesn't even bother discussing...
OVEREXTEND, WILLARD! It means that you do more than you CAN in taking care of others. It means that you are wearing yourself thin, that you neglect your other duties, you don't take care of yourself, you get up in the middle of the night if someone calls you, don't take vacations ever, work year around, clock around, NEVER DO ANYTHING BUT TAKE CARE OF OTHERS.
If you don't understand how sick that is, and the negative consequences on you, your wife, your relationships and the people you believe you are "taking care of", you are more stupid than I think...
Considering that he twists this question into "don't ever care about others so much that you overextend yourself", I assume he doesn't even know what "overextend" means.
Willard, Overextend is a verb that means
"to extend, reach, or expand BEYOND A PROPER, SAFE OR REASONABLE POINT; to extend for TOO LONG A TIME; to obligate oneself to MORE THAN ONE HAS TIME FOR OR CAN ACCOMPLISH WELL.
"If necessary, I put my own values or needs aside in order to preserve my relationship with my significant other."
So if your wife asks you to do something that goes against everything you believe in - let's say, wants to get a lover, separate homes, divorce, heck, why not, wants to go to a vacation on a spa, where you can't "help" anyone, but must just receive care, you would do that.
It's not a trick question, Willard. A human being should NEVER be in a relationship in which he/she must violate his/her own values and needs.
"But I will assume that this statement refers to other values"
LOL, of course, just to be able to answer "yes" :-D
"I have a hard time receiving things from others."
"I'd rather give than receive, if that's what the question is getting at."
No, that is not what the question is getting at. It is getting at that you feel VERY uncomfortable, unworthy, if someone gives you something or does something for you, so uncomfortable, that you'd rather not celebrate your birthdays and wish everyone would forget Fathers' Day and Christmas.
"After completing all these questions, I'm told by Dr. Bourne that if I answered three or more of these statements with a "yes," I am likely to be dealing with chemical dependency issues. What does eight "yes" responses mean? I must be a basket case!"
You are, but perhaps not codependent.
This is the problem with self-testing. You are interpreting the questions in a manner that fits your agenda, which in this case is to prove that "codependency movement" is a bad thing, because you, the height of human perfection as a spouse, would be codependent according to a short internet questionnaire. :-D
"Have I been co-dependent too long to avoid these terrible consequences?"
You're not codependent. You don't even understand what the word means.
On the other hand, I suppose you have had your arrogant, loathing attitude towards your fellow human beings you don't understand for too long. As you base the human worth on how much they "help" others, and you consider yourself doing nothing but "helping" others, you believe to be quite perfect and flawless by now, and refuse to understand how ridiculing and belittling others is harmful... for some reason you don't give rat's ass if you'd offend, harm, anger or insult dr. Bourne.
"If I'm co-dependent, why don't I experience fear very often."
You should know that questions end with question mark, but to answer your question: it is because you are not codependent.
"since I am so very co-dependent"
no, you're not.
"I'm none of those things that Dr. Bourne says co-dependent people are."
Because you're not codependent.
"I'm clearly co-dependent"
No, you're not.
"Pity the poor person who has an anxiety disorder. Or more to the point, pity that person's spouse. The solution to "chronic, generalized anxiety" is to..."
I bet dr. Bourne didn't suggest those things as solution to codependency. I wouldn't be surprised if the site gave some rational advice on how to get rid of codependency. Such a pity the site is no longer up, and dr. Harley didn't bother giving the link so that people could have used the Internet Archive. :->
Nevertheless, Willard F. Harley, Jr. Ph.D. gives his own list of what one should do to get rid of codependency; by turning the questionnaire upside down and twisting them into the opposite extreme.
You can't just consider if you can do what is asked of you, no, you have to willfully do the exact opposite of what others expect and ask you to do.
Instead of giving yourself some slack for being a human and making mistakes, you must start being irritable and unpleasant and trying to make people angry with you.
You can't get the giving and receiving in balance either, no, you must start grabbing everything.
To stop being codependent, Dr. Willard requests you become a selfish xxx and psychopath.
The truth is that you shouldn't get your self-esteem for what you do, but from knowing you are worthy for just being you. You cannot buy yourself worth by doing things, not to yourself nor others.
Caring about others is not the same as taking care of others, but one should NOT overextend oneself, ever, for anything. Do not try to give more than you have, do not try to take care of more people than you can. The world is full of animal lovers who have caused the perdition of themselves and their beloved animals by taking on too many cats and dogs, and not being able to take care of any of them.
Remember that you are the only person with whom you will live your whole life. If you betray your values for someone else, you will end up hating the other person. Now, your values shouldn't be cut in stone, but another person's whims are not worth it. If your significant other loves you, she/he will adjust her/his life so that you won't ever need to sacrifice your beliefs for him/her. This is one of the questions you MUST ASK BEFORE YOU GET MARRIED, if you believe in marriage.
Also, your needs are NEEDS, not some whims and fancies. No-one is worth ignoring your needs. Your marriage is not worth saving, if your spouse wants you to put your needs aside.
Actually, he unwillingly managed to get a couple of advices right:
Don't try to make people happy. You can't. Just as Willard himself says: "I know, we can't "make" anyone happy."
Dr. Willard believes though that you should try to do impossible things and build your self-esteem on whether you succeed or not. :-> I bet you are going to feel so good about yourself when you fail time after time trying to make impossible things.
Do not blame yourself if your loved one is upset with you. ASK instead and work together to set things right. :-D
and
Don't let what other people might think or feel to influence you. Do what you believe to be right, relax, be kind and let others take responsibility of their own feelings, thoughts, opinions, ideas, values and behavior.
"If you want to know the truth, co-dependent beliefs and behavior do not lead to anxiety. They lead to healthy, happy marriages. Joyce and I am living proof."
No, you're not, because you're not codependent. You say yourself that you won't jump just because she tells you to, you know you cannot make her happy, you are not afraid people are angry or upset with you, and you don't allow your fear of others' feelings deter you from your objectives, as you are not even afraid of that others might not like what you do!
"If the "important" person is an alcoholic, what they expect is often totally unrealistic and should not be done."
Even non-alcoholic persons can have totally unrealistic expectations. It's not what the other person is, but what their expectations are.
"[makes sense] as long as it is limited to spouses of alcoholics"
One must also include every other addict, and people can get addicted to a lot of things. Frankly, an addictive personality will get addicted to ANYTHING.
Dr. Willard is blessed with a wife who shares his values and doesn't have unrealistic expectations, but a lot of people are dysfunctional and codependent, for real.
No, the true definition of codependency doesn't include the whole humanity. In a relationship we should be interdependent, not codependent. Caring and considering people around you is not codependency. Making the people around you the judges and measurements of you is.
But if people don't understand what codependency is, they could as well be giving advice like dr Harley.
Codependent behavior IS self-defeating and we SHOULD get rid of it.
It is NOT self-centeredness.
"Co-dependency can be defined as the tendency to put others' needs before your own."
Well, that's good, isn't it?

Dr. Harley says "I look at that definition and think of Mother Teresa"
Now, Mother Teresa was not as good as people tend to think...
If I find my self-esteem in the way I care for others, what's wrong with that?

"If we were all co-dependent, wouldn't this be a wonderful world?"
NO!
NO!
